1 Project Brief

By researching other sub-culture “design” processes, I have to create a multidisciplinary framework that explores parallels between the two processes.

2 Defining My Design Process

Analyzed my personal design process of a project from start to finish.

3 Chosen Culture

The subculture I chose was music production and sound.

Reasoning

  • I have a background in music.

  • Have a personal connection to someone who worked in the music industry in South Korea.

  • The process in making music is different as they are designed with different sensory.

4 User Interview

Sean was a music producer in South Korea. He collaborated with sound engineers and artists when creating music and has an extensive knowledge on the process of creating music.

5 Music Making Process

While conducting the interview, I learned about the different ways a band and how music producers create their songs. Another aspect my interviewee made clear was how 3D surround sound works.

6 New Design Process

I created a new design process by incorporating aspects from music production into my existing design process.

9 Final Design

The key points I focused on with the design are

  • Syncopation/Repitition

  • Inspired by sound waves

  • Show contrast —> differentiate the “beat” and the “melody”
